WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology:

Weather conditions:

Air temperatures ranged from +6-11øC at night and from +13-21øC at day during survey period from 26-30.06. Tundra was covered with flowers of ledum, cloud-berries and rhododendron. Imagos of mosquitos, craneflies bubble-bees and butterflies appeared in mass. Heavy continuous rain from 18.00 27.06 to 4.00 29.06 was unlikely to have strong impact on birds.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

Breeding conditions:

Brown Bears were numerous in tundra on lake shores and in mountains, and one Red Fox was seen. At least 2 White-tailed Sea Eagles were seen hunting on lakes, where Herring Gulls were common. Few pairs of Arctic Skuas nested on tussocky slopes. Arctic Skuas and Ravens were regularly seen near lakes. Single nest of Rough-legged Buzzards was found in the mountains, and one Golden Eagle was seen.
Ringed Plover and Common Snipe were common in the area, and hatching chicks were found in the latter species. Wood Sandpiper, Dunlin and Red-necked Phalarope were numerous, and many adult birds of two former species were alarming near broods. Single records of Pacific Golden Plover, Ruff, Long-toed Stint and Grey-rumped Tattler were made. Lesser Sand Plovers and Great Knots were observed in mountains with small chicks. Generally, nesting success of waders can be evaluated as high based on available observations. Broods of Willow Grouse were also common in the mountains. Yellow Wagtail, Red-throated Pipits, American Pipits and Bluethroats were feeding chicks, while fledgelings were observed in Lapland Bunting.

Rodent dynamics:

Lemmings were not seen, but tracks of voles were observed. Arctic Ground Squirrells were particularly numerous in mountains, where pikas were also seen in stony tallus.
